Introduction
Instagram is a creative social media platform, and just like any platform, it pays off to understand how it works then you can look at quickly growing your following to ultimately become an influencer and run an influential and engaging page. By following the below tips myself, one of my own travel related Instagram pages (@placesandstories1) grew from 0 to 5k followers with a 26% engagement rate (average industry rate is 4.7%) in only 3 months. Let's get it started! 1. Setup an awesome profile Your username is the first thing that potential followers will notice so it’s important to consider what username you choose to go for. First impression matters! Consider having something in your username that again relates to your niche and indicates what your content is about. The username is essentially your “brand name” and how you are identified in the first instance. A username will have an @ symbol in front of it. However, this is different to the name. Essentially, the name is what appears right below the username when someone types in the search area what type of content they’re looking for. The words that you select in the name area are searchable. This means that whenever someone makes a search on Instagram, the results will show accounts that include the keywords that you have in your username and name. The more that the words you choose to add are relatable with your content in the name area, the higher the chances that your account will be found and exposed to more people, resulting in more potential followers. When potential followers visit your Instagram account, one of the first things they will notice is your bio. They will read it to gather more information on what your page is all about. Like the usernames, the best and more successful pages are the ones with a simple and easy to comprehend bio. This is also a great space to showcase creativity and convey your message in written form before your audience scrolls further down to see it all visually. Feel free to also include a link to send your followers to a different page. Many users add a link advertising another social media page they own while others might use it to advertise a website. 2. Create quality content and be active For your account to gain traction and gain thousands of followers every day, you absolutely have to post inspiring and shareable, good quality content. To create or curate high quality content make sure you are using high resolution images and videos and then be sure to follow this up with a good editing softwares. It is important to come up with a compelling and engaging caption so your followers take something away, whether it’s learning something new, being inspired, or asking them to take action on something. For the best results, you want to aim for posting 3 times a day. If this is not achievable, then aim to post once a day or every two days at a minimum. The most important thing is to be consistent and do not allow yourself days without posting. It’s important not to underestimate the power of Instagram Stories, as they count a lot for you engagement levels and visibility! Plus the way in which people are consuming content now, is that they are hungry for more and they are scrolling through static feeds just as much as they are spending time viewing Instagram stories as this can sometimes feel a little bit more personal and interactive. Just like static posts, it’s recommended to post at least 3 insta-stories per day and then move onto 5 once you already have your strategy well-defined and you start to learn what your followers engage with the most. You should engage regularly with your followers through liking, commenting, adding interactive elements to your Instagram stories. Make sure to also follow other accounts in your niche too for building connections, attracting followers who have similar interests and to strengthen your Instagram presence. 3. Research a group of hashtags that work well together The main objective in the use of hashtags are to help you grow and to help the categorization of your content and account. Therefore, it's extremely important that your hashtags are related to your niche. There are two types of hashtags to consider: popular hashtags and top hashtags: Popular hashtags as the name suggests, are the most popular or trending hashtags on Instagram and these are what you should look to avoid using too often. They tend to have a range of 100 million to 1 billion plus images or videos linked to them. If you have a small account and you try to use too many of these, you will be wasting them because they are extremely overused resulting in your content and posts likely being drowned out by the other millions of images and videos using the same hashtags. Aim to use top hashtags that are more specific hashtags that are less crowded and are easier to stand out. They will also expose your content to who is more likely to be interested in it. It’s important that you don’t max out the maximum number of hashtags (30) as this is considered as spam to the algorithm and avoid using banned hashtags. Consider using around 20-25 hashtags and make sure to research efficient hashtags to use related to your content. Get involved with engagement groups An engagement group in a nutshell is a virtual group composed by Instagram users and pages that look to support the growth of one another by actively liking and commenting on each other’s posts as soon as they’re uploaded. As simple as this concept is, it’s vital for rapid organic growth to be part of engagement groups as they have a crucial role on helping you get thousands of likes per post and therefore increasing your engagement rate and exposure to more followers. You can look to create one yourself but your best bet would be to find an existing one to join and understand first-hand how they operate. Make sure to read the rules of these groups first and be prepared to also contribute back to the group by liking and commenting the posts from other group members. 5. Delegation Successful delegation, leverage other people work and knowledge are keys in every business. If you look at your instagram account as a business opportunity in future then pay a close attention for this chapter.
